AEBS mandatory installation is imminent, ushering in a billion dollar cake in the market

Release Date :2025-10-13

The AEBS system consists of three major modules: perception, control, and execution. It monitors the distance of vehicles or obstacles ahead in real time through cameras, millimeter wave radar, lasers, etc. When the distance is detected to be less than the warning distance, the system reminds the driver to brake through sound and light; If the driver does not respond and detects a distance less than the safe distance, the system will automatically take braking measures to avoid collision accidents. As an active safety technology, AEBS can intervene in vehicle braking when the driver is negligent or fails to apply the brakes, greatly improving driving safety. Therefore, AEBS is widely recognized.

According to the requirements of the "Safety Technical Conditions for Operating Passenger Cars" (JT/T1094-2016), starting from April 1, 2018, all operating passenger cars with a length exceeding 9 meters need to be equipped with LDW (Lane Departure Warning) system and AEBS (Autonomous Emergency Braking System) front collision warning function. Starting from April 1, 2019, new production vehicles should have other functions of AEBS. The implementation of the standard means that commercial vehicle AEBS will usher in market opportunities.

With the maturity of AEBS and the deepening understanding of the necessity of active safety, countries around the world are vigorously promoting the popularization of AEBS, and China is also accelerating the promotion and application of AEBS in the form of standards and other forms

1. In December 2016, the recommended transportation industry standard "Safety Technical Conditions for Operating Passenger Cars" (JT/T1094-2016) issued by the Ministry of Transport of China stipulated that for B-class and III class operating passenger cars in M2 and M3 categories (referring to operating passenger cars that can carry more than 9 passengers and do not allow members to stand), from April 1, 2018, newly produced operating passenger cars with a length exceeding 9 meters must be equipped with LDW (Lane Departure Warning) system and AEBS (Automatic Emergency Braking System) front collision warning function that meets JT/T883 requirements. From April 1, 2019, newly produced vehicles should have other AEBS functions.

2. The "Technical Conditions for Motor Vehicle Operation Safety" (GB7258-2017) released in September 2017 requires that from January 2021, highway buses and tourist buses with a length greater than 11 meters should be equipped with lane keeping assistance systems and automatic emergency braking systems that comply with standard regulations.

3. According to the 2018 Chinese New Car Evaluation Regulations, vehicles without active safety systems such as AEBS will not receive a five-star rating in the future. The promotion of AEBS in the passenger car market will be promoted through new car evaluations.

4. In November 2018, the General Office of the Ministry of Transport issued a notice on the "Work Norms for Verification of Road Transport Standard Vehicles (Trial)", which provided a clear timetable for the application of AEB in transportation vehicles.

5. The 2019 Ministry of Transport Industry Standard JT/T 1242-2019 Performance Requirements and Testing Regulations for Automatic Emergency Braking Systems of Operating Vehicles was officially implemented on April 1st, marking the first year of AEBS application in China.

China has the world's largest automobile market, with a sales volume of 28.879 million vehicles in 2017, including 4.1606 million commercial vehicles. Different types of commercial vehicles have their specific application scenarios. Medium and heavy trucks, as well as large buses, are mainly used for long-distance transportation and have the characteristics of fast speed, long mileage, high driver labor intensity, and easy fatigue. In addition, once a large vehicle is involved in a rear end collision or other traffic accident, it is more likely to cause casualties. By installing AEBS, the accident rate and casualty rate can be significantly reduced. In addition, the high cost per vehicle of large vehicles is not sensitive to the cost of AEBS. Therefore, the commercialization of AEBS will be prioritized on medium and heavy trucks and large buses.

As one of the most important active safety technologies for automobiles, the mandatory installation of AEBS is of great significance in improving traffic safety and reducing casualties in traffic accidents. The mandatory installation of AEBS on large buses also brings valuable opportunities for its market explosion. With the implementation of standards and the continuous maturity and application of AEBS, it is expected that the market demand for AEBS will exceed 450000 sets in 2020, with a market size of nearly 10 billion yuan.
